38th BG guy on Harley MC
Photo 10. From a copy negative. Photo of a young man who served in the 38th Bomb Group & his Harley MC. Motorcyles seemed to be universally popular with aircrew personnel. Something about fast and dangerous I guess.
man in the 5th AAF in shack
Photo 11. From an original 4"x5" acetate negative. This young man shows up in a lot of the 38th BG photos in Sea Bird Publishing's collection. Here he is in what appears to be a photo supply shack at a forward base in the S.W. Pacific. The map on the wall appears to be one of New Britain. © Sea Bird Publishing, Inc., 2001, All rights reserved

Photo 12. From a copy negative. 5th AAF aircrews had to be resourceful when faced with problems in a forward area. Here is a "problem solving" session undeway.
miserable conditions in the tropics
Photo 13. From a copy negative. Torrential tropical rains often created flood conditions at forward bases the 5th operated out of. Here is a shot that really shows this well. Note that the man on the cot is pushing a floating object about like a kid in a bathtub. A photo like this makes it pretty clear why more news journalists covered the war in Europe than in the S.W. Pacific.
a big feast
Photo 14. From a copy negative. For men in the 5th life wasn't all being shot at, dealing with weather, bugs and weird jungle critters though.

Photo 16. From a copy negative. A nurse, probably traveling with the Jack benny U.S.O. show, and some 5th AAF service personnel chat.
stone-age man meets modern man
Photo 17. From a copy negative. Many of the bases that the 5th and the 13th flew out of were on remote, primitive islands where the locals had never before seen such technology as our fighting men brought with them. A result of this interaction was the creation of "Cargo cults" among many of the islanders in Melanesia and islands near New Guinea where the locals wait still for the return of cargo bearing foreigners.
